UNITED STATES – From foreign policy to pets, Joe Biden is already making his mark as the 46th President of the United States. One other major change has also taken place. The man who is now officially third in line to potentially replace Biden has also appeared in five Batman movies.
Yep that’s right. The person who could one day become leader of the free world has quite a history with Gotham City’s caped crusader.
It would totally suck if something awful happened resulting in Leahy becoming President. But you have to admit it would be cool to have a leader who clearly loves Bruce Wayne so much. Right?
The next President could be a huge Batman fan???
To be clear, it’s unlikely that the line of presidential succession will ever amount to anything. But now that Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy has been sworn in as President pro tempore of the United States Senate, he is officially in the running to one day take over the Oval Office. Leahy is currently behind Vice-President Kamala Harris and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Patrick Leahy is currently the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate, but not only that, he’s also probably the biggest Batman fan as well. Leahy has been reading Batman comics since he was four years old. He apparently spent countless hours at the library immersed in stories about DC Comics’ iconic hero.
The politician’s most famous cameo came in the 2008 adaptation The Dark Knight. He got to star opposite the late Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker.
Yikes. We hope for the health of the country that there isn’t a Joker-esque character out there about to topple the U.S. government resulting in Leahy becoming President. After the past few weeks, that would just be too much.
Not only has Leahy appeared in five Batman films, he’s also made cameos on TV shows and written about the superhero in books. Leahy even worked with DC Comics to create a Batman graphic novel about the dangers of landmines.
Leahy’s film roles, starting with 1995’s Batman Forever and most recently Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, have also been used for good. Leahy has donated all of his appearance fees and residual checks to the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, VT. That’s the same place where he first learned to love Batman as a child.
“It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”
The sitting U.S. Senator says he loves the Defender of Gotham’s story so much because, unlike other superheroes, Batman is a mortal human being. “The Batman prevailed through superior intellect and detective skills, through the freedoms afforded by great wealth and through sheer will,” Leahy once wrote. “Not superpowers, but skill, science and rationality.”
While there’s certainly a lot going on in politics right now, folks on social media were quick to chime in on this interesting fact about one of America’s longest standing leaders.
Wow. Just goes to show that sometimes people in positions of power can have a lot in common with the folks they govern.
Despite his track record of making cameos, it sounds like Leahy will not make an appearance alongside Robert Pattinson in The Batman due to scheduling conflicts. While that’s a bummer, it would be worse if there was a conflict that resulted in Patrick Leahy somehow becoming President!
Let’s hope we never have to hear about this old Senator ever again, unless it’s Batman related!
