Ahh the 2000s. What a couple of years. The ipod was discovered, Dave Matthews was around, and the internet was just beginning o bloom into the weird mess we know today. Before the word meme had even entered into our collective unconscious (along with ideas like the tree of life or a monotheistic god) there was Peanut Butter Jelly Time.
According to USA Today, there are two pivotal moments to discuss when you’re talking PB&J time. First, in 2001 when “The Dancing Banana emoticon was created by Trym Stene (Tierra) as a .gif.” The second was in 2002 when “Peanut Butter Jelly Time was made into a flash animation by Ryan Gancenia Etrata and Kevin Flynn. It spread on the Web via message boards.”
It just perfectly captured that moment in American history (2001.)
However, there’s one other thing we have to talk about when we talk about the 2000s. That’s right. Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin, and the whole New England gang up in Quahog, Rhode Island. Could there be a more perfect distillation of the 2000s? I don’t know. Maybe!
Who even knows what the hell is really going on in this scene. Peter is sad and I guess Brian does this for him a lot? Don’t we all wish we had a friend who would do something so utterly ridiculous and mindlessly stupid for us. During times of darkness, we all need a little foolishness.
