Tiktok is making the world a better, weirder place one short highly edited video at a time. Fads run through Tiktok pretty quickly, but we hope the latest one doesn’t get phased out too soon. The latest trend to hit the scene is sea shanties. Ay ay, tiktok!
According to Variety “the Encyclopedia Brittanica defines a sea shanty as a “sailor’s work song dating from the days of sailing ships, when manipulating heavy sails, by means of ropes, from positions on the deck constituted a large part of a sailor’s work.” One way to get through a long hard day in the sea salt mines is to sing about it. The sailors would choose a sea shanty guy and they would lead the whole ship in sea shanty shenanigans. More workplaces should do it, to be honest.
The trend might seem silly to some, but only fools underestimate the power of the sea. These catchy diddies are fun to sing, but they also nurture a sense of camaraderie amongst those who sing them. These days, camaraderie is in short supply. That’s probably one of the reasons this trend has caught on so hard. That and these songs rule.
The Modern Man’s Sea Shanty
The big song to sweep the scene is “Wellerman” which originated in New Zealand in the 19th century. You can’t go wrong with a classic! But there’s always room for innovation, especially in music. We have a few ideas for sea shanties. These songs are being sung in harmony amongst the men’s humor staff as we speak.
-Got My Heart Broken By A Sea Lion
-The Dolphin Daddy
-This Wave Is Going To Kill Us All
-Davey Jones Owes Me A Lot Of Money
Ideally, more people will record their shanties and give the world further reason to sing. Hopefully, TikTok users will take notice and revive other long antiquated but far out musical genres. Hymns gotta be ready for a comeback soon, right? Want more news about the glorious and terrible sea? Click here!
