Fast food chains keep introducing new lucrative offers and meals every now and then but you've probably never heard about paying for those meals after you pass away. Well, a New Zealand-based restaurant chain called Hell Pizza has come up with a rather interesting take on the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) scheme where you only have to pay for your pizzas after your death. At first it might sound like a lame joke, but turns out, it is an actual offer availed by the restaurant chain as a response to the increasing popularity of BNPL products in New Zealand.

You may not have to sell your soul to the restaurant for pizzas but you definitely have to sign a legal contract with Hell Pizza. “As the heat turns up on ‘buy now pay later’ schemes trapping a growing number of Kiwis in spirals of debt, we’re launching AfterLife Pay, where customers don’t have to pay for their pizza until they’re dead with no late fees or penalties,” the Hell Pizza website reads.

Even though the new offer is on a trial run until June 17, 2023, Hell Pizza is set to gather 666 select customers to sign a legal document that will state that the cost of their pizza will be paid for upon death with no interest or late fees applied, per Smart Company. The terms and conditions section of the website also states that valid applicants must "submit a declaration declaring that the Applicant (its Estate) will pay HELL for the Pizza in the Afterlife upon the Applicant’s death.”

If you're wondering how this will be enforced if Hell Pizza goes out of business or if this campaign is just forgotten in 50 years, well, the company has considered that, too. Hell Pizza also has the authority to "forgive any debt owed to it by the Applicant" according to the terms and conditions. The restaurant chain recently opened its first outlet in Brisbane, Australia but AfterLife Pay is exclusively available to New Zealand citizens for now.

This promotional tactic might end up giving 666 free pizzas to the customers but the whole scheme has a positive message behind it. “AfterLife Pay is a light-hearted campaign that reinforces HELL’s stance on Buy Now Pay Later schemes—you can have your pizza and eat it too without any pesky late fees or penalties,” Hell Pizza says, per the outlet. According to a 2022 report from the Australian Finance Industry Association (AFIA), it was revealed that there are currently at least 5.9 million active BNPL accounts across Australia, and this payment method is getting more popular by the day. But at the end of the day, one can enjoy free pizzas till their last breath with this scheme.
