A teenage boy unknowingly crossed international borders in a shipping container and arrived at a Malaysian port.
Imagine playing hide and seek with your friends and finding this perfect spot where you can hide without being discovered but somehow you get locked up only to be transported miles and miles away to a foreign land.
As terrifying as this scenario is inside our imagination, a 15-year-old boy lived through this reality. Fahim, a Bangladesh native, was playing an innocent game of hide-and-seek with his pals when he found a decent hiding spot inside a shipping container where he eventually fell asleep.
The container was then sealed and sent off to Malaysia without anyone noticing Fahim stowed away inside it. After six days of the journey which would have surely been grueling for the teen, the cargo arrived at Port Klang of Malaysia where the staff was dumbfounded to discover a boy emerging from the shipping container.
The container left the Bangladesh port on January 11, 2023, and didn’t arrive in Malaysia until January 17, 2023. All this time, the young boy was trapped inside the metal confinement with no food or water as he desperately kept shouting for help.
The boy was fortunately discovered by a staff member at the Malaysian port after hearing knocking noises coming from within one of the containers. The Marine Police Force, Malaysian Immigration Department, Klang District Health Department, and several other government agencies arrived at the scene to check the shipment in which Fahim was stowed away.
In a video posted by The Star, a man finally managed to communicate with Fahim in his native tongue and ask him about his father as well. Later in the video, the boy was wheeled away on a gurney by some medical staff.
According to India Times, the authorities at the Malaysian port suspected that Fahim was a victim of human trafficking or some other crime but their suspicion was quickly dismissed when they discovered that Fahim was a victim of bad luck instead. The original video has been circulating on the internet through several social media platforms and has been reposted on Reddit as well by u/purple-circle.
Several people in the community expressed their thoughts and concerns about Fahim's unfortunate situation. u/i-hoatzin wrote: "I'm glad he was saved. He appears to have some degree of intelligence limitation. I mean that by the way, he interacts. Although, of course, it can be disorientation after being locked up, without water or food." Another user, u/TopRevolutionary720, commented that Fahim "got lucky because ship voyages can easily take weeks."
According to the news outlet, Malaysian authorities are making arrangements to deport Fahim back to Bangladesh once he recovers in the local hospital. We hope others like Fahim can take note of this incident in the future while playing hide and seek and not take a chance of hiding inside places like a shipping container.
