Imagine going on stage, plucking up enough courage to try and make people laugh, deliver your jokes, and just as you're about to wrap up your set, you get rewarded with a beer can thrown at your head. Sounds terrible right? This is a situation that was faced by a stand-up comedian named Ariel Elias while performing at Uncle Vinnie's Comedy Club in Point Pleasant Beach—a seaside town in New Jersey.

Another comedian, Gianmarco Soresi, was waiting with Elias to perform in the club when they spotted a group of about 20 people walking into the club wearing Mexican-themed costumes. It seemed they were celebrating someone’s birthday and were already pretty drunk. Soresi made an off-hand prediction that the group might get tossed out of the club for being too rowdy before the end of the night.

"I was like, 'I hope they get thrown out during your set instead of mine,'" Soresi told BuzzFeed News. "Sure enough, it was worse than either of us could have possibly imagined." When it was Elias’s turn to perform, she opened her act with her usual commentary about body image and being a woman before opening it up for a Q&A to engage the crowd. That was when one member of the drunken group raised her hand to ask a totally irrelevant question. "Did you vote for Donald Trump?" the woman asked.

"I think it was mostly just like, Why are you asking me this? What's your endgame here?" Elias recalled thinking at the moment. She decided to handle the situation wisely and deflect the question with a joke. "Why would you ask me that knowing I'm the only Jew in this room? Are you trying to get me killed?!" she asked the woman, hoping that would be the end of their conversation. 

However, the rowdy woman wasn’t about to give up and she asked, "So you voted for Biden?" Elias tried to deflect her pointless political questions once again but the woman in the crowd was adamant.

"I can tell by the fact that you're still talking when nobody wants you to that you voted for Trump," Elias responded as the crowd cheered for her. Then, from seemingly out of nowhere, a beer can came hurling for her head.

"At first I was in shock. Did that really just happen?" Elias recalled. "And then I saw the beer can and I was like, I mean, I have to drink this. Like, there's nothing else I can do with this. This is the only way to recover. I have to drink it. So I drank it!"

Elias chugged the beer and continued her set nonchalantly and the internet applauded her along with the live audience at her stand-up show.

The video soon went viral on social media and even celebrity talk show host Jimmy Kimmel responded to Elias' tweet after she wondered if she could make an appearance in his show. The comedy club’s owner, Dino Ibelli, confirmed that the heckling woman and her partner swiftly left the venue after throwing the can at Elias. Ibelli contacted the local police to hand over the surveillance footage after he was able to identify the patrons.

"It feels nice to have any positive recognition. Maybe it softens the blow—no pun intended—a little bit," Elias said about her sudden fame. Elias has been performing for the past 11 years and she is thrilled by her accidental viral status for handling a disrespectful situation gracefully.
