Saturday Night Live has never failed to troll political and social upheavals and the former president of the USA, Donald Trump, is the show’s absolute favorite meme material. During this weekend’s SNL cold open, comedian James Austin Johnson took to the stage to poke fun at Trump after his indictment. Johnson impersonated Trump and claimed that his persecution has been worse than Jesus Christ's.

Johnson’s Trump poked fun at the former president who was arrested on the charges of 34 felony counts that accused him of falsifying business records. Mikey Day, who was playing the character of Jesus at the last meal prior to his crucifixion, announced that he committed no crime before Johnson’s Trump interrupted the hearty supper session before the impending doom. "Sounds familiar?" he questioned the crowd which erupted in applause.

"A famous wonderful man was arrested for no reason at all. If you haven’t put it together, folks, I’m comparing myself to Jesus again, and what better time than on his birthday, Easter," the fake Trump humored. The phony Trump also remarked that "he is being persecuted on a level that likes of which the world has never seen" and "claimed that it was worse than that of Jesus Christ."

The fake former president also went on to list his similarities with Jesus but found ways to distance himself from the son of God at times. “He rose from the dead on the third day, I would have done it faster,” the faux Trump claimed the impossible. “He had a good mind for business, water into wine, pure profit. And he had big, big rallies just like me. And a lot of his followers got in big, big trouble just like mine. All because I told them exactly what Jesus would have said: get very violent and start a war,” Johnson’s Trump added during the skit.

According to HuffPost, Johnson has been impersonating Trump for several other SNL skits. Previously, Johnson mocked the former president parodying his disaster-stricken visit to East Palestine, Ohio. Johnson's Trump showed no mercy to the residents in the skit and the parody didn't even spare mocking current president Joe Biden, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg.

But all the fun and mockery apart, the real Trump has been embroiled in legal troubles for a while now. According to The Guardian, Trump supporters believe him to be innocent and have rallied to demand his freedom, claiming that the outrageous charges were an evidence of an abuse of political power and proof that the system was attempting to silence their man. While Trump's case continues to rile up the nation, we can at least expect light-hearted memes and parodies like SNL skits to pop up every now and then.
