Elon Musk’s Failed Rocket Launch Being Described as a 'Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly' Sparks a Meme Fest
King of memes and controversies, Elon Musk has yet again become the laughing stock. Musk's SpaceX launched a "mega-rocket" called Starship on Thursday morning, April 20, 2023, but it landed horizontally and caught fire over the Gulf of Mexico.
The Starship is touted as the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built. The rocket began its journey from Boca Chica, Texas and reached an altitude of 10 kilometers. The take-off looked promising amidst the cheering crowd but the excitement was soon subdued. The test rocket combusted into disastrous flames but the company called it a 'test program' and not a 'technical failure.'

Although the rocket successfully climbed toward orbit, it flipped and descended to the ground. The video clip showed that it kept flipping, went into a tumble and instead of detaching from the booster, it detached completely into a ball of flame.

The company phrased it as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly" which triggered a meme fest on Twitter. The rocket fell into fiery fragments, despite the control room jumping in excitement and applauding the explosion. Weird. The reason was the company had no big goals with Starship. The only goal was its successful launch and engineers celebrated when they saw that happen. All congratulatory messages turned into anxious posts across Twitter.

The users began sharing the video on Twitter and the memes generated from the failed launch compared Musk to HBO's hit show Succession's character Roman Roy. A Twitter user, @dog_feelings, wrote, "I do not destroy my toys. They simply experience a rapid unscheduled disassembly. This has nothing to do with me." Another Twitter user, @pixelatedboat commented, "Musk's unmanned rocket may have exploded but it's an important first step towards his ultimate goal of exploding a manned rocket." @Dictionarycom had a hilarious response to the rocket fail, "We're pretty good with synonyms but "rapid unscheduled disassembly" is a new one, even for us." An account named @DarthPutin, quipped, "Have decided my tanks have not been getting destroyed. Instead they have "rapid unscheduled disassembly."
The company played it off with a laugh and the SpaceX posted, "As if the flight test was not exciting enough, Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly before stage separation."

Twitter’s not been ruined by Elon Musk, it’s just experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly…— Larry the Cat (@Number10cat) April 20, 2023
"We should have had separation by now," said SpaceX announcer and engineer John Insprucker on the launch Livestream. Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter and Tesla, founded SpaceX in 2002. Its goal was to "reduce space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars." Musk predicted this year that humans will reach Mars in the year 2029.
