The Iowa State Fair has an array of such one-of-a-kind contests that celebrate the state's unique brand of quirkiness.
Humans have had some weirdest ways to ward off boredom for ages. Among them, fairs and fests are the most awaited gatherings as they provide the opportunity to not only socialize as a community but also flaunt some hidden talents. The Iowa State Fair is now catching the attention of many on social media for its one-of-a-kind competitions and equally enthusiastic participants and cheering audience.
According to LADbible, "The Husband Calling Contest"—held during the Iowa State Fair—became an internet sensation for its unique brand of quirkiness. The contest is open only for women and has been the talk of the town for quite many years now.
The contest has the audience rolling with laughter when women grab the mics to speak as they usher in the great spirit of Midwest America. It isn’t unknown that the women of the midwest are all sporty and cheery when it comes to action on the field. These women of Iowa rock the stage as they demonstrate the unique ways in which they call out to their spouses.
It’s no joke for them as a prize money of five dollars is at stake. Meanwhile, the audience bears the yelling, roaring, and shrieking all for fun. A viral clip from the 2017 edition of the competition made quite a splash on Twitter this month. It begins with the woman who came fifth that year belting out: “Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob! Hurry, hurry! Robert Dean!"
I would win second place in the husband calling contest. I can't compete with #1 I admit it. https://t.co/oAOpJHcJ5z— rat liker (@rat_liker) January 13, 2023
The time-honored tradition at the Iowa State Fair is where you would hear women showing off the true power of their vocal cords like a boss while the audience cheered them on even as their ears go numb from the shrill screams. In an interview with Iowa PBS, Camellia Pohl—who came in first in the 2021 contest—said: “I have been admiring these women since past five-six years that we’ve been able to come... and I said this year is going to be the year when I’m gonna try and I was debating between my Opera singing or the rolling of the R’s.. and then all my family said to go for the rolling of the R’s."
The State fair also has many other unique contests to participate in—including Mom Calling, Duck Calling, Turkey Calling, or Chicken Calling—aside from the Husband Calling contest. So, if you don't qualify for Iowa's Husband Calling competition there’s a plethora of options to go for.
The Mother-Daughter Look-A-Like contest, the Best Bagger contest, and the Mr. Legs pageant are also some hilariously fun competitions that take place in the state so that nobody is left behind. Would you love to be a part of it?
