Kate Winslet Recalls the Time She Almost “Did a Poo” on Stage | “I’m Convinced I‘ve Totally Shat Myself”

People past their teenage years have at least one embarrassing memory they still cringe about. No matter what they do, those situations are just unforgettable and it is no different for Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet. The 47-year-old actress has been working on stage productions and films from a young age and is no stranger to being bold and vulnerable in front of an audience. But a particular incident that happened on stage during her teenage years has remained a mortifying memory for the actress.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2022, Winslet opened up about a theater-in-the-round production of What the Butler Saw at Manchester's Royal Exchange where she had a part. According to PEOPLE, the Mare of Easttown actress confessed that she almost "did a poo on stage" during the stage performance. "I played a character called Geraldine, who is applying for the job of the doctor's secretary," Winslet reminisced.

Since it was a circular stage, the audience could "see her from every angle." Winslet continued, "And he the doctor says, 'Well let me see, I need to give you a full body examination, please strip.'" But that wasn't the most challenging part for a then 18-year-old Winslet. "So, I go behind the curtain and I do what I've done for nights on end. I have to then lie on this bed and I lie there really awkwardly and uncomfortably and suddenly... it's happening, it's happening, I'm gonna s--- myself and I'm lying on a white sheet, naked on a stage. I'm convinced I've totally s--- myself," she added.
Wanting to rush to the loo in the middle of something important is horrendous for anyone and Winslet was in full view of countless people. We can only imagine the horror she went through. As the guests on the talk show chuckled at Winslet casually recalling her mortifying moments, the actress continued to overshare and make everyone laugh harder. "Ladies and gentlemen, I had not actually done a poo but the second I got into my dressing room and ran to that bathroom, it was like gunfire," she said about her crappy experience.
Winslet, being the thorough professional, handled the whole situation quite gracefully and lived to tell the tale. According to Deadline, the Titanic actress scooped up her third BAFTA award for Best Leading Actress in I Am Ruth where she shared the screen space with her real-life daughter, Mia Threapleton. The miniseries explores a harrowing relationship between a mother and a teenage daughter who is experiencing severe mental health issues in the social media age. As Winslet continues to win big in her Hollywood journey, we look forward to hearing more of her hilarious behind-the-scene stories from each acting job.
