His dream to visit Sydney, Australia, took an unexpected turn when he accidentally landed in a small city called Sidney in Montana.
Never underestimate the power of double-checking. Your bank details before payment, your medical reports before treatment, and definitely your ticket before you fly off for a vacation. Double-check... everything.
Kingsley Burnett, 62, had been looking forward to his dream vacation in Sydney, Australia's Bondi Beach, but fate had other plans. His dream vacation turned into a nightmare when he discovered that he landed in Sidney, Montana, instead of Sydney, Australia. Oops!
“I saw the little plane with like 9 passengers and wondered ‘how is that going to get me to Australia,’” Kingsley told The New York Post.
Burnett also recounted his accidental landing in an interview with KTVQ and said it shocked him to see the view from the plane's window.
"I saw a mountaintop covered in white snow. At that point, I knew I was in trouble," Burnett said. He intended to book a cruise supposed to depart from Sydney, Australia. But instead mistook the small town in Montana for Sydney and made an unintentional booking for the same. Poor guy.
He may have muddled the destination, but it did not end there. Further in the interview, he discussed the airport codes and how that too got mixed up. "It is a matter of acronyms, the S-Y-D as opposed to S-D-Y. Somebody has to fix that," he complained.
Burnett admitted that he was surprised to see that the flight's fare was cheap to travel from New York to Sydney. When he realized he was not Australia, the New Yorker was perplexed about what to do next. But, thanks to Carol Castellano, an American Airlines employee, Burnett was able to book a return flight to New York as well as a room at the Boothill Inn where he could spend the night.
Burnett checked in to a local hotel in Sidney, Montana, while he waited for his next flight to take him back to New York.
Meanwhile, the hotel's manager in Montana revealed that Burnett is not the only one to have mixed up Sidney and Sydney. What? Yes, somebody else made a similar mistake.
"This is the second time we have had a guest who was trying to get to Sydney, Australia," the manager told reporters. Meanwhile, it was the beginning of a new friendship between Burnett and Castellano, the American Airlines employee.
"He was really funny. Kingsley came, and he went, 'I have got a problem,'" Castellano said. Burnett sang praises for Castellano and said, "For Carol, it was not a paycheck. It was a human being she was dealing with."
Burnett joked about how excited he was to see kangaroos in Sydney, Australia, but had to manage with Castellano in Montana instead. "Montana did not have kangaroos. It had Carol. And that was good enough for me," he quipped.
Unplanned friendships are special. Indeed, the universe had it written for Burnett and Castellano to meet in unforeseen circumstances. All's well that ends well, and although Burnett could not make it to the cruise, he has rescheduled his trip in June.
