Man Accidentally Donates $15,000 Instead of $150 to Charity but Makes the Best of the Situation and Helps Raise More

If there is one thing with no cons, it is pure and simple charity. Hold on. There is something that could go wrong. One man on Reddit wanted to donate a small amount to a great cause. Little did he know, he'd be contributing to the entire bank of donations. u/lazybear90 got more than 34 thousand upvotes when they confessed they did something chaotic when "donating $15,041 to a poor community in Bangladesh instead of the $150 donation I intended." From San Francisco, this man learns about a community in Bangladesh that needed charity. He describes how the mix-up happened. "I go on the GoFundMe page and donate $150. Or so I thought. Moments later, I get a text on my phone warning me of an unusually large transaction on my credit card. I’m confused and swipe to open the text message. It says I have made a payment of $15,041. I’m sweating. How could I have donated FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS? I spend the next 10-15 minutes retracing my steps, and finally, I realize I had accidentally typed my credit card information while my cursor was still in the donation box, and just like that 150 became 15041. Yikes."
He calls the GoFundMe support helpline and gets assured that he will be refunded back. But the man was worried that they hadn't seen such a big amount being donated before and will see this amount being raised. Immediately the next morning, he was flooded with messages. One message changed his entire perspective. "The man had sent me a video of himself from Bangladesh, surrounded by dozens of impoverished and hungry people holding bags of food, thanking me BY NAME (Michael) for my generous donation. Part of me wants to scream, part of me wants to crack up laughing. I start swiping through the man’s messages and it is picture after picture after picture of poor Bangladeshis thanking me for my kind donation. Literally hundreds of photos of frail, elderly, disabled and malnourished individuals holding signs with my name. Thank you, Michael," he explains.
After seeing this, he knew what he had to do. "I couldn't live with myself just donating $150 after seeing how the community responded to the $15,041. I decided the least I could do was to add a zero, so I donated $1,500 once the original donation was refunded. $1,500 goes very far in Bangladesh for urgent food relief. I helped a great cause and I got a funny story out of it," he said about the win-win situation. The man felt pretty guilty after this but people in the comments read this funny story and also donated to the cause. "As of this comment, the GoFundMe campaign has garnered an additional $1,209 in donations due to this post. Since I made this comment over $60,000 has been donated!" wrote u/XboxPlayUFC. "Best post on here in AGES. Thank you for the great story and for helping out those folks," added u/GunasInFlux.

Bangladesh has taken significant steps to reduce poverty, but poverty is expected to be around 18% in 2023 with about 20% in rural areas, per DD News. With a population of over 170 million, this means that millions of Bangladeshis face difficulties in obtaining adequate resources. Donations like this (preferably not accidental) could really help the community.
