Guy Pisses off His Partner and Gets Trolled on the Internet After Booking Cheap Flight with Layovers for Her on V-Day

People often endure minor inconveniences in a relationship, but sometimes it just takes one stupid mistake to ruin everything. To top it off, if your mistake was a Valentine's Day gift to your partner, it's unpardonable. Yes, we are not kidding. Ask this boyfriend who landed in hot waters for supposedly booking a cheap flight with multiple layovers on the much-glorified V-Day.
Poor thing posted an argument with his girlfriend on Reddit's r/AmItheAsshole community. Guess what? The bloke not only locked horns with his partner but the internet, too, swarmed to tear him to pieces over his frugal decision. He wrote on Reddit that his girlfriend had threatened to cancel the getaway trip because of his booking choice. He asked, "My girlfriend and I have been arguing about this, so I need some opinions/advice here." He also shared that the couple has been in a long-distance relationship. "We've been together for five years and are currently long-distance and have been for the past year," added the boyfriend.
He further revealed how they manage the finances when one of them visits. "Normally, she visits me and I pay for the hotel we stay at and she pays for her own transportation costs, whether that's an Amtrak ticket or a plane ticket or whatever." Fair enough. He also opened up about some financial crunch on his part. Regardless, the couple decided to spend time together and go for a 'quick getaway trip' for the magnified, commercialized day of love, Valentine's Day. He continued, "My girlfriend said since a hotel/Airbnb costs way more than her plane ticket, she will pay for the hotel/Airbnb this time and I can pay for her plane ticket."

So far, so good. The bloke was suffering economically, so he added, "I was grateful and after she picked out a nice resort for us to stay at, I bought her a ticket." Now's the catch. To save money, the boyfriend chose a cheaper flight which became the reason for the conflict. "She's upset because the plane ticket I bought has a layover. She's mad because she's going to, in her own words, 'be stuck in an airport/plane for like 12 hours because I cheaped out and didn't buy her a direct flight. We are in a dilemma," revealed the bloke. He also confessed that his girlfriend is terrified of planes.
The catch is the woman will have to switch planes and after four-to-five layovers, she will land at the destination. So now, in the boyfriend's words, "She doesn't even want the ticket anymore and will just cancel the trip entirely or buy her own ticket." OMG!
Reddit users jumped to shake some sense into the boyfriend and called him out for his 'stupid decision.' A Reddit user, u/1biggeek, responded, "4-5 hour layover?! I'd be with you if it were 1-2 hours. But 4-5 hours each way. To save $100. YTA."

A second Reddit user, u/cinnamondaisies quipped, "Oh, this makes me happy to read as I opted for a 6-8 hour layover in Changi instead of forking over $500-1000 more for a direct flight." To be fair to the OP, he admitted, "I do feel a bit like I'm the AH because she has told me before how many times she hates layovers. AITA?" Reddit screamed yeah, you are an A*****e.
