McDonald's Places McCrispy Ad Beside Local Crematorium Sign Only to Remove It After Locals Call It "Tasteless"

The billboard was put next to a crematorium sign at a bus stop right opposite Penmount Crematorium. The company clearly hadn't researched the area well.

McDonald's is one of the leading fast-food chains in the world and they are known for their mouthwatering burgers since their first store opened in the '50s. Their golden-arched logo and lucrative commercials and billboards are known all over the world. With almost 40000 outlets worldwide, McDonald’s has become synonymous with grabbing a quick bite anywhere around the globe.

But one of their poorly placed advertisements created quite a ruckus in the UK. An ad for the joint's fan-favorite McCrispy—which has now become a part of McDonald’s permanent menu—was distastefully placed right beside a sign for a crematorium in Cornwall, reports Daily Mail.

The McCrispy ad features a breaded and fried chicken breast served on a sourdough-style sesame seed bun, topped with iceberg lettuce and black pepper mayonnaise. The ad also reads: "A new favorite, here to stay." Sure, the burger might stay on the menu but the future of the poorly placed ad was short-lived.

The ad was placed at a bus stop which also points a sign towards a crematorium, which angered many netizens and locals as the picture went viral on the internet for unfortunate reasons. It even caught the eye of renowned author, Stephen King, who tweeted about this billboard situation as well. "Micky D’s billboard next to a crematorium has been taken down. It was advertising McCrispy. You can’t make this stuff up," King wrote in his tweet.

CornwallLive shared a picture of the sign and ad on their official Instagram page and wrote: "McDonald's has said it will remove a 'tasteless' sign opposite a crematorium in Cornwall after the unfortunate coincidental placement was pointed out by CornwallLive. The sign, advertising the fast food chain's McCrispy burger, is right next to a crematorium sign and has been placed on a bus stop directly opposite Penmount Crematorium on the road between Truro and Carland Cross."

A few people on the internet might have found it hilarious and ironic but the brightly-colored billboard ultimately had to go. As per CornwallLive's Instagram post, a woman (@barbos67) tried to find humor in the situation though she agreed not everyone will take it lightly. She commented, "As a widow, I find this hilarious. Then again, it’s the (morbid/sarcastic) sense of humor that was one of the lovely things I shared with the love of my life."

@michlou1966 was not so receptive and said, "My mum’s funeral was there in October last year, I think that is in bad taste sign for fast food, maybe put there as a joke it should be removed pronto."

True to their words, McDonald’s indeed agreed to take down their advertising billboard which was put up next to a road sign for a local crematorium. A spokesperson for the company said, "We were unaware of the road sign in the vicinity of this bus stop. However, in light of the concerns raised by CornwallLive, we have asked for our advertisement to be removed." Cornwall Council, which runs the crematorium and owns the bus shelter, was unable to comment on the matter.

We hope McDonald's investigates the area properly before putting up another sign and stirring up more controversy.
