Yeoh was in the mood to be naughty and left her mom a message: "Oh, mom, no, we tailor-made the tuxedo for me. So I'm wearing pants to the Oscars."
Michelle Yeoh has been finally getting the worldwide recognition she deserves, bagging one major award after another. Yeoh recently received a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once and her fans are cheering hard for the actress.
The 60-year-old actress who has also been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category recently sat down with Willie Geist for TODAY's Sunday Sitdown to share an interesting story. When it comes to prepping for the big award night, celebrities often get guided by seasoned stylists and fashion experts but in Yeoh's case, it was her mother, Janet Yeoh.
"My mom and I have a very interesting, beautiful relationship," Yeoh said in the segment which aired on March 5, 2023. "She just called me the other day, [and said] 'If you're going to the Oscars, you must not wear pants.'"
Yeoh's mother had a lot of advice and tips to spare to ensure that her daughter looks the best while walking down the red carpet. "She was like, 'And don't do this' and 'Don't do that' and 'You should keep your hair' and...," the 60-year-old shared.
But Yeoh was in the mood to have some fun with her mom's suggestions. "I was so naughty. I left her a message," the star revealed.
"Oh, Mom, no, we tailor-made the tuxedo for me. So I'm wearing pants to the Oscars," she wrote in the text to her mom and Yeoh's mother responded with a "really long message." She informed the actress that she thought her daughter looks "short when she wears pants" and should therefore tell her stylists that "she changed her mind."
The Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon actress admitted that her mom forgets that her daughter is an adult at times and sometimes has to be reminded. "'Mom, do you know how old I am?'" Yeoh said she told her mother. "You know, when I go home, she'll say, 'Your hair is so long. You look a little too tan. You're this. You're that.' I'm like, 'OK, nice to see you too, mom.'"
Asian parents are pretty reserved when it comes to being openly affectionate to their children and Yeoh's mother proved this to be true when it came to her Oscar nomination. "She didn't say congratulations in that way," Yeoh said. "She'd just say like, 'Everybody is very happy for you.'"
Yeoh also thinks that her mother would have made a "great movie star." She revealed in an interview with Deadline, per CNA Lifestyle: "My mom loved the whole aspect of performing. Even now, when we throw her a birthday party, it's like a concert. She's doing costume changes, getting on stage and serenading everyone."
Even though Yeoh's mother did not express her joy in a traditional way, the actress is aware that her mother is proud of her. "She is very happy. I know she's very, very happy," Yeoh said. The veteran star also mentioned how Everything Everywhere All at Once has played a role in mending relationships among people who've seen it.
"I've had mothers that come up and say, 'yeah, your film, you're pretty good. Your film is a bit, not quite sure I understand. It's okay because my daughter saw it and she's talking to me again.' So that was very powerful," Yeoh revealed.
As Hollywood's biggest night fast approaches, fans have been showing their overwhelming support for Yeoh as she continues to make history with her awards sweep this season and thoughtful speeches. We wish her all the best and hope the deserving ones win the Oscar.
“F*ck!…This is not just for me, this is for every little girl that looks like me.”
