A New York City couple's wedding day, which coincided with Donald Trump's indictment day, turned into unexpected chaos but the couple took it in their stride. Khalia Beckford and Peter Don are college sweethearts and decided to focus on taking wedding vows rather than what was happening next door.

Former President Trump's historic arraignment was happening on April 4, 2023, at the Lower Manhattan courthouse and several couples showed up for a completely different reason. Beckford and Don, who met four years ago at LaGuardia Community College, did not let the news cycle ruin their big day. "I did not plan for this," Beckford told Buzzfeed News. "I heard about it at work but didn't know this was happening. But it's dope. It's a moment and it's not going to ruin my big day. The cameras [are] for me. Everyone came for me."

It was a media madhouse in Manhattan as the historic event brought hoards of protestors and politicians who showed up to witness the president's appearance to plead not guilty to 34 felony charges. Don proposed to Beckford at home as she added, "It was nice, I was coming home, I didn’t know what was happening, and he decorated it well." The bride wore a white lace dress she had purchased the night before from Macy’s. Beckford is from Jamaica and she concluded, "I'm not thinking about anything. I'm just thinking about being married and just being happy, this is our big day." They were the first in line to get into the court for their 8:30 a.m. appointment.

Apart from Beckford and Don, another high school lover and the happy couple chose Trump's indictment day to tie the knot. They were "dumbfounded by the coincidence" as well. Chandler Dean, a speechwriter at West Wing Writers and Carolina Treviño, a product manager at Planned Parenthood chose the historic day and certainly did not anticipate the circus outside the Manhattan courthouse. A memorable day, indeed. Dean said, "Then later we read reports that it would be happening at 2:15 p.m. just an hour before our courthouse appointment and all we could do was laugh," per Business Insider.

"We just wanted to get this logistical step out of the way and have a nice, intimate, low-key moment before the whirlwind of a big wedding. It's hard to imagine a more outlandish scene happening just around the corner," added Dean. Dean even took to TikTok to share the news of their marriage on the day of Trump's arraignment featuring screenshots of a CNN report and an email from the Manhattan City Clerk's Office confirming their appointment. He captioned the video saying, "My fiancée and I picked quite a day to get married at the Manhattan courts," which went viral with over 300,000 views. Dean also noted that they were just one minute of walking distance from where Trump would be arraigned.

"We find it funny," Dean said. "We joked that this will get us a nice spike of Getty Images and pictures of this big moment [in our lives] from other photographers."
