'You' Superfan Drew Barrymore Gets Locked Blindfolded in Glass Cage as Part of Epic Birthday Surprise by Penn Badgley

On Barrymore's 48th birthday, her co-host Ross Mathews pulled this prank on her with Badgley whose 'You' character Goldberg is known to cage victims.

Drew Barrymore received the ultimate surprise on her 48th birthday. The Drew Barrymore Show host has made no secret of the fact that she's a fan of Penn Badgley's Netflix thriller series, You, which has featured his serial killer character, Joe Goldberg, holding victims hostage in a glass cage.

To help Barrymore ring in her 48th birthday on the February 22 episode of her show, co-host Ross Mathews blindfolded Barrymore and locked her inside a glass cage similar to the one Goldberg favors. He then brought Badgley out to greet her.

"So, Drew, you are of course in a glass cage because we know that you love a certain show," Mathews says in the episode. "So we brought 'You' to you." As Badgley appeared outside the cage, Barrymore dropped to the ground in excitement. "This is a birthday gift for you. I know that you love to remove stains," he joked as he passed a stain remover through the small glass window. While the 50 First Dates star was still left speechless, a defeated Badgley added, "You're not supposed to want this!" Barrymore acknowledged the gift, and replied, "You know me so well!"

Later in the episode, the Gossip Girl alum presented the Scream star with the second part of her present: "a bloody-slash-dirty shirt" that she could clean with her new stain remover. This isn't the first time we've seen Barrymore romanticize Badgley's creepy character. During a Drew's News segment that aired last year, the actor dialed into her show, where she told him, "I was worried we were going to summon weird people to our lives because we kept talking about why couldn't we be loved the way you love." Barrymore then said she wished that Badgley would stand outside her window and care about what she was thinking and feeling.

You is currently in its fourth season and follows Badgley's bookstore manager turned serial killer amidst his new life in London. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Badgley discussed the audience's infatuation with serial killers, particularly Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, who were portrayed by Zac Efron and Evan Peters in the Netflix projects Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story respectively. When asked what he'd tell "people who are finding themselves attracted to serial killers," Badgley replied: "You need to look at that, inside."

The former Gossip Girl star continued, "Now to be fair, with our show, you're meant to fall in love with him. That's on us. But Ted Bundy? That's on you! Jeffrey Dahmer? That is on you – that is on Netflix. That is squarely on the shoulders of Netflix. I don't have answers at this point. I do, but they're long and... yeah, it's weird, man."
