So when it came to a chewed piece of gum from none other than the actor of Iron Man, the internet was more than enthusiastic to know more about the whole deal. But it appears that Robert Downey Jr’s discarded chewing gum is worth more than the life savings of some folks. A seller on eBay named jvanilla-59 listed the spat-out piece of gum for a whopping bid of $55,000.

According to ABC7, the now famous piece of chewing gum was placed by Downey Jr on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star of Iron Man director Jon Favreau as a joke. But little did people know that the piece of gum will get collected by a business-minded person who will then attempt to sell it on the internet.

The seller even made his offer a little lucrative by stating that the chewed-up wad of gum will be shipped in a plastic container to the lucky owner. But netizens were baffled at the price and the idea behind selling a nasty used object. A lot of them exclaimed how the price of Downey Jr's gum was "worth more than their neighborhood" and some even joked about how absurd it will be to own the actor's saliva-covered gum in a container.

In the end, the bidding which opened on March 31, 2023, was closed for good. It doesn’t matter how star-stuck you are, anyone will think twice before splurging on chewing gum that has been spat out on a street by their favorites. Downey Jr’s fame might add some value to the gum but it wasn’t always a smooth ride for him either. According to ComicBook, the actor paid tribute to the director during the ceremony where he was awarded the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Favreau had lobbied producer Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to cast Downey Jr in his breakthrough role of Tony Stark (Iron Man). Back then, the actor was known for his off-screen troubles rather than his on-screen performance.

Had it been an item like a shirt worn by the actor or signed merchandise, the item would have sold out quicker than one can imagine. But unfortunately, the eBay seller who scooped up the chewing gum from the Hollywood Walk of Fame and tried to make a fortune out of it wasn't lucky enough. The seller did not receive a single bid on the product but ended up getting a lot of media attention instead. We hope the seller can try a less nasty item from a celebrity to auction off in the future.
