A vintage Mickey Mantle baseball card just sold for a whopping $5.2 million at an auction. That’s right: $5.2 MILLION! Not only that, but the record setting collector’s item sold for over $1 million MORE than the previous record holding card featuring Angel’s slugger Mike Trout.
Damn. So this Mickey Mantle baseball card cost $5.2 million and it didn’t even come with a pool? Sounds like someone robbed whoever bought this card. If you’re going to be putting up that much money for something it better come with a heated in-ground pool.
The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle is a relic in the baseball world. It’s believed that there are only six baseball cards like it still in existence. While not the slugger’s rookie card, the Mantle cards that Topps produced in 1952 are renowned for being part of their first annual set. They are also infamous because Topps apparently dumped thousands into the Hudson River in 1960 after overproducing them.
The incredible story behind this particular Mickey Mantle card is part of what attracted its new owner. “The 1952 Topps Mantle is the holy grail of sports cards,” said new owner Rob Gough. “As a kid ripping packs in the ’90s, I always dreamt of owning one. … I felt this Mantle was highly underpriced.”
Yeah it might have been underpriced but $5.2 million??? And you don’t even get an incredible spot to host pool parties with family and friends? SMH man that seems like it’s not even worth it.
With a sticker price that outrageous, folks on social media were obviously quick to react when they heard the news.
Congrats to Rob Gough on this incredible purchase. We’re not sure how you can even enjoy owning an old baseball card worth that much, but an avid collector like him will surely find a way!
Again, it would have been a lot more fun if he put that money towards an incredible pool setup. But to each their own!
