Teen Wore 13 Pounds of Clothes to Avoid Luggage Fee on Airlines but Her Hack Backfired | “I Looked Like a Bear”

People often tend to film their flight journeys and post them online, and some even share useful hacks to make others' air travel smooth and easy. But this girl's hack of trying to escape luggage fees totally backfired, and we can say that it serves the teenager right. According to New York Post, a young woman identified as Adriana Ocampo had to pay a hefty fine after wearing most of her clothing to board a Jetstar flight from Melbourne to Adelaide in Australia, all because she was seemingly unable to fit all her luggage within the weight limit.
Ocampo might have initially felt she could fool the airline crew with her hilariously puffed appearance and board the flight easily but she was still denied entry. On March 20, 2023, the 19-year-old was returning home after a trip with a friend when she was informed that her luggage was overweight. Right after that, she wore a bunch of garments and hoped no one would notice. Her friend attempted the same technique but neither of them was successful.
They added 13 pounds of garments but they still weren't able to go through the final check, and were therefore fined AUS $65. Additionally, she was required to wear every piece of clothing for the whole 80-minute flight which itself sounds like torture. "I was in my hotel room and could barely close my luggage, and I knew my bag was somewhat over the limit. When we went to board the flight, we saw them pulling out a trolley with a scale. We thought the only way we can take the weight off our bags is if we put it on ourselves so we started putting on our jackets and coats but we were still over the limit," Ocampo explained, per the outlet.
"They said the fine was $65 and we didn't feel like spending $65 so we went back and put more clothes on. I looked like a bear. I was hysterical, I was laughing so much," she added. Not only that, the girls tried to put on layers and layers of jumpers and jackets and stuffed their baggy trousers with t-shirts and iPad in them. But no matter what they did, they were still carrying more stuff in their bags over the weight limit. "Everyone in line was staring at us and laughing at us, it was kind of embarrassing. People were annoyed that we were holding the plane up," Ocampo said.
It seems very unfair as she’s only a small girl. Whilst it’s essential to have a weight limit, there should be a combined body weight and luggage limit for flights. If you’re fat, you can only bring a toothbrush.

100lb girl gets fined because her suitcase is a couple of pounds overweight
400lb man pays the same price for his ticket but it costs 4x more jetfuel to get him off the ground because he is subsidized by everyone else?
Jetstar Airways has also addressed the inflight fashions and luggage hack in a statement, per the outlet. “While we certainly see the funny side, we have limits to carry-on to make it fair for everyone,” said an airline spokesperson. “Keeping track of how much baggage passengers bring onboard means everyone has room for their belongings and we’re meeting our safety requirements.” Well, we can take notes from this incident and always make sure our luggage is not above the weight limit or we would run the risk of paying extra for the baggage.
