The price of Bitcoin has skyrocketed over the past few months. But some investors who now hold millions of dollars worth of the cryptocurrency are having trouble accessing their funds. The reason? They can’t remember their passwords.
Jesus, seriously? You didn’t write that shit down or memorize it? Fuck!
The New York Times recently reported that a handful of now crypto millionaires are on the brink of completely losing access to their Bitcoin accounts. One Bitcoin owner in particular named Stefan Thomas has only two guesses left before he’s completely locked out. His account currently holds Bitcoin worth $230 million!
“Bitcoin owners who are locked out of their wallets speak of endless days and nights of frustration as they have tried to get access to their fortunes,” says the New York Times report. While traditional banks have customer service reps for people who get locked out of their accounts, Bitcoin has almost nothing.
“I would just lay in bed and think about it,” Mr. Thomas said. “Then I would go to the computer with some new strategy, and it wouldn’t work, and I would be desperate again.”
Could you imagine sitting on a fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars without being able to access it? That would drive us crazy!
While Thomas’ story is a huge bummer, it turns out he’s not alone! According to the article, almost 20 percent of current Bitcoins are either lost or stranded in accounts that owners can’t access. This has resulted in Bitcoin owners spending hundreds of hours trying to figure out their passwords.
Good lord. That sounds like an absolute nightmare scenario. Other folks on social media seem to agree.
